You don’t believe in election finance reform, Garry?

The funny thing about spreading the wealth is that everyone thinks they are “middle class” and it won’t effect them. I had a conversation with a guy yesterday who earns over $150k who was telling me that the rich should be taxed more. When I pointed out that he was in that bucket (earning 3x the avg household income) he was shocked. His answer: “I don’t have any money left over at the end of each month so I can’t be rich”. I told him he needs to move from Queen Anne to “approved non-rich people housing in Renton”.

I’m ok with more taxation to invest in education but let’s not pretend that the Prius driving, European vacationing Seattle set are “average people”.

Very true, Tom. A co-worker told me the other day that she thought we should get taxed more to give other people who are less fortunate more opportunity. I don’t even know where to begin…

I respect Chad’s opinions but in this case he is barking at the wrong tree. The greatest challenge any nation faces is to keep its own government in check. George W Bush and his cabinet were way out of line. Starting a war on false premises, raining loans on people who cannot afford them claiming arrival of “ownership society”, disastrous energy policy, complete disregard of environmental problems and global warming, ban on scientific research and list goes on. Not the least of all problems is overblown budget deficit, which is just another way of taxation.
It takes a shortsighted person not to see a great historical moment in Obama’s victory. Victory in spite of Republicans’ campaign appealing to worse instincts: fear, ignorance, and racial divide. America acknowledged malfunction of current government and “rebooted itself”. This ability is a feature of societal order of higher magnitude. Barack Obama’s victory, in spite of his race and his name is awe-inspiring. And I am sorry you cannot see beyond increase in your marginal tax rate.
